The First 5: Meet the Once Upon a Farm Flavors That Started It All

Once upon a time, Cassandra Curtis spent hours developing recipes for her 6-month-old daughter in their kitchen. Somewhere between the washing, peeling, chopping, blending, and clean-up, she had a vision: to save other parents time and effort by offering them convenience without compromise.

“I found a way to bring as close to homemade as possible using high-pressure processing (HPP) so that as many families as possible could enjoy the homemade goodness without having to make it themselves,” says Curtis.

She poured her heart—and her ever-expanding knowledge—into product development, even earning a holistic nutritionist certification along the way. “I included veggies, fruits, and fats in every bite,” she says, “while ensuring it had optimal taste and color so that mom and dad (and all other caregivers) would want to enjoy it, too!”

Those early days led to something special: the first five flavors. Green Kale & Apples, OhMyMega Veggie!, Strawberry Patch, Mama Blueberry, and Wild Rumpus Avocado helped lay the foundation for Once Upon a Farm. More than ten years later, these original blends are still household favorites, loved by little ones and parents alike.

1. Green Kale & Apples

“This was the very first recipe I created,” says Curtis. “I was trying to encourage the consumption of nutrient-dense leafy greens, like kale, in a way that kids would like to eat.”

Equally as important as nutrition has always been taste. “Apples and bananas are two favorites for kids, and blending them with kale was a tasty way to introduce greens.”

2. OhMyMega Veggie!™

Apples, carrots, beets, and ginger —oh my! Root veggies meet apples in this vibrant, zesty combo kids keep reaching for. “Ginger is great for a pop of flavor in this fruit and veggie combination, brightening up the earthiness of the beet,” says Curtis.

3. Strawberry Patch

“Strawberries have always been a favorite fruit,” says Curtis, “and I wanted to make something that had a good amount of veggie in it.”

Butternut squash proved to be a perfect pairing, adding creaminess without overpowering the berry flavor and still allowing the bright strawberry color to shine. “This was one of my personal favorites early on,” says Curtis. “I would eat it on its own or even top it on ice cream.”

4. Mama Blueberry

Kids can get their fill of juicy, sweet blueberries all year round with this tried-and-true blend. Of the nutritional component, Curtis says, “I wanted to pair sweet potato, a good source of vitamin A, with fats like coconut milk.”

Superfood blueberries add brightness and micronutrients to the blend. “I was going for something that was more mellow in flavors than the rest of the lineup,” says Curtis, “and this one hit that target.”

5. Wild Rumpus Avocado

Creamy avocado pairs surprisingly well with tropical pineapple and banana for a bright and creamy snack. And a burst of mint helps with palate expansion. “This one was an immediate favorite for kids and adults alike,” says Curtis.
