Broccoli for Babies: Nutrition and Meal Ideas
Broccoli is a green machine, a hearty and nutritious veggie that—while it may take some convincing—can be a great starting solid (and go-to veg) for your little one.
Benefits of Broccoli
Broccoli is an edible green plant in the cabbage family with a large flowering head and fibrous stalk. A relative of kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, broccoli is as popular as it is versatile. It’s incredibly healthy and packed with vitamins and minerals, including:
- Vitamin A (beta-carotene): Contains antioxidants to help protect against cell damage. It may also help your heart, lungs, and other organs work properly, maintain bone growth, and support healthy vision (source).
- Vitamin B6: Has antioxidants and can offer anti-inflammatory benefits. It may also be important for optimal brain development.
- Fiber: Supports a healthier gut and regulation of blood sugar levels.
- Vitamin C: Contains antioxidants to help protect against cell damage. It may help support healthy vision and improve iron absorption.
- Potassium: Essential nutrient that may contribute to the maintenance of body functions including proper kidney and heart function, muscle contraction, and nerve transmission.
- Calcium: May aid in building and maintaining strong bones and teeth.
Note: These are known benefits of the listed vitamins and minerals. Broccoli benefits may vary based on serving size and other factors.
Broccoli Serving Suggestions for Babies
You can start serving broccoli starting at 6 months. Raw, broccoli is very firm, so it must be cooked before serving to minimize choking risk. Steam or boil until the florets are soft. Then, you can mash, or slice the stems in half lengthwise and serve as a finger food. Once your child is ready, they can enjoy the florets with a dipping sauce (think yogurt, hummus). Other great meals include broccoli and noodles, a broccoli and egg frittata, or even incorporated broccoli into easy veggie muffins. With so many ways to serve and enjoy broccoli, you really can’t go wrong. If you do find yourself struggling to convince your little one to get on the broccoli train, remind them that the florets look like little trees. And that’s neat.
