Pineapple for Babies: Nutrition and Meal Ideas
Picture yourself on a tropical vacation. You’re eating a bowl of the freshest, most delicious, juiciest fruit you’ve ever tried in your life. What’s in that bowl?
We’re willing to bet you were picturing pineapple (and maybe some mango, papaya, or guava).
The quintessential tropical fruit—juicy, vibrant, sweet, and just a touch tart—pineapple also makes a great first food for babies. Its delicious flavor and powerful pack of nutrients lend themselves well to starting solids.
Benefits of Pineapple
Though it has a similar flavor profile to citrus fruits, pineapple is not, itself, a citrus fruit. It is sweet and tangy and blends perfectly with other fruits. It’s also packed with vitamins and minerals, including:
- Vitamin C: Contains antioxidants to help protect against cell damage. It may support healthy vision and improve iron absorption.
- Manganese: Helps build bones and may support immune and reproductive systems.
- Vitamin B6: Has antioxidants and can offer anti-inflammatory benefits. It may also be important for brain development.
- Folate (aka Vitamin B9): assists in red blood cell formation. May support cell growth and function.
- Fiber: Supports a healthier gut and may increase regularity.
Note: These are known benefits of the listed vitamins and minerals. Pineapple benefits may vary based on serving size and other factors.
Pineapple Serving Suggestions for Babies and Toddlers
Pineapple can be served starting at 6 months. It can be easily puréed or served as age-appropriate finger food. As your baby grows, you can offer bite-sized, then larger pieces.*
For a quick and easy taste of pineapple, you can always go with ready-to-serve baby food, like our Pineapple, Banana, Avocado & Mint blend. For toddlers, our Pine-Apple Berry Punch Smart Blend is a great option.
*Be sure that your child is ready for these snacks. Be mindful of food size and texture and cut into age-appropriate pieces to minimize choking risk as needed. Only feed your child when they are seated and supervised. More info on choking hazards here.
